For the diehard romantic, there may be nothing so thrilling as chronicling that one true love. The Book of Us presents 150 topics on the subject–ranging from "Before I met you, my love life was…" to "One of the reasons I think we lasted so long as a couple is that…" Like David Marshall's earlier book, The Book of Myself, which is also a keepsake, this book makes us wish it were prettier. But it is the thought that counts, and a lot of thought will go into turning these empty pages into something a spouse, one's children, and then their children will cherish. And not to fear: While this is a very sweet book, there is also plenty of room here to ruminate on the less saccharine aspects of life partnership: financial crises, humorous escapades, parenting woes, and home-improvement projects. A word to gay readers: One of the book's five sections focuses on "Tying the Knot"; some of the questions specifically address elements such as the bachelor party and the wedding dress, but most of the questions are generic enough to apply to any type of commitment ceremony. –Jane Steinberg

A beautiful record of their time together.
November 1, 1999
My friend’s husband died 6 months ago. This book has been her grief companion, as she puts on paper the many memories they had created together. It means a lot to her to have this record of their love. In moments when she misses him, she reads some of the stories she’s recorded and feels him close again.
Great if you use it correctly

I bought this book as a birthday gift for my fiance. We have been together over 2 years and are getting married in about 100 days.
I thought that this book would be very sweet if I filled out everything up to the wedding/marriage part. However, I think that this book might be a bit hokey if just bought and given to someone blank. However, if you’re willing to start filling it out, it gives your companion an interesting way to look at memories and will encourage him/her to fill it out further.
I would not suggest getting this book if you are only dating or if you are newly dating: it defines and confines your relationship too much. But this is a great book if you are a couple who are not always together. My fiance lives in England, and we often enjoy sharing memories of our courtship, our vacations, etc. This is a perfect way for your partner to hear your voice and cherish memories when he/she is alone, or when you are unavailable.
A good gift for someone/a couple who is romantic, nostalgic, and interested in a little project or creativity.
Lovely wedding or wedding shower gift.

I have several friends getting married this Spring so I’ve been looking for inexpensive yet nice, thoughtful gifts. This book really fits the bill. I’m buying one for all the showers I’m going to. It’s a wonderful way to show your support for the couple’s future together. It’s a lovely, touching book that shows you care.
Not very creative

This book is great for chronicling events and memories of the couple. The format of the book is that there’s a question prompt at the top of the page and 1-2 blank pages following for you to answer. I would say it acts like a great journal, but really one person only need to fill it up (most likely we can guess which of the couple will take time to write in it).
If you want a book where the couple can really interact and learn about each other, I’d recommend: All About Us. It has some of the question & long answer-type format, but it also has series of multiple choice questions and short answer sections. It’s a lot of fun, too!
Great Valentines or Anniversary Gift!
January 7, 1999
This is great! I was looking for something unique for my husband for our upcoming Anniversary (on Valentines Day). I wanted to do something more than a box of chocolates. I can’t wait to present my beloved with this nice-looking journal, all filled out with the many wonderful memories and stories of our courtship, wedding, early years and now middle years together. The prompts on each page really helped get my memories flowing, so it was easy to fill out. What a great way to say I LOVE YOU!

I bought this for my husband for our 10th anniversary and he loved it! I had completed the entire book before I gave it to him and it is a great thing to pass on to your kids.
I also bought one for my parents to fill out. They have been married for 42 years and are having a BLAST filling it out together!
If you’re buying this, you know what you’re in for…

It’ll be fun to look back at it in 40 years, but it’s important to realize that you’re being confined to a set of specific questions/topics. They’re widely varied, and not all of them may apply to you.
Perhaps the most important thing to realize is that you’re going to be forc.. errr… strongly encouraged by your wife to define your relationship in 20-hand-written-line increments, one page at a time.
It’s hopelessly romantic, but all-in-all a fun thing to look at later on.
A gift of love for my husband

I’m excited about this journal. I’m filling it out as a special surprise gift for my husband for Valentine’s Day. After 25 years of marriage, I wanted something more unique than chocolate to give him. This book is really helping me express my love for him by creating a collection of our memories, from when we first met, dating, the wedding, our early marriage years and now our middle years. This book makes it easy to do. Thanks to the authors of this great little book!
A Happy Valentines Day.

I bought this for my boyfriend and I for Valentines day this year. I filled out all the parts I possibly could, and when I gave it to him I told him once we’re on our way through getting married, we’ll fill the rest out together.
He loved it, it’s a very sentimental gift and it’s PERFECT to keep track of your growth together as a couple.
I strongly suggest getting this if you’re already married, or if you’re with someone you know you want to spend the rest of your life with.
Good bonding activity for a long distance couple

I cannot remember how I ended up with this book, but it sat on our shelf untouched for a really long time. Then my husband, active duty AF, got deployed (again) and I decided to pull out this book. For the last three deployments we have mailed it back and forth, each of us filling in one entry at a time. It has really help bond us across thousands of miles and hundreds of days apart. In the age of email, text messaging and Skype, it has been nice to put pen to paper and relive all the special times we have shared as a couple. I highly recommend this as a gift to a long distance, military or newlywed couple.
