Dating: What Does His Car Say About Him?

December 23, 2009

Women sometimes make snap judgments about a guy based on the car he drives.

Wrong? Yes.
Reality? Also yes.

If a guy rolls up in a Jag or a Lexus or a Mercedes Benz GLK, we assume he’s successful, and educated. And hopefully tall and handsome as well.

On the other hand, if a guy is driving a Hyundai or Kia or a Yaris or something, we might wonder if he’s still in college, or living with mom and dad. Or destined to spend his career in a cubicle.

If a guy is driving a big, flashy red sports car, we tend to think he’s compensating for something — and we’re only too quick to guess what that might be.

As for the guys who drive those nice but practical cars (the Toyota, Honda, Ford, and Nissan crowd) — well, sometimes we’re not quite sure to think about them. Are they fiscally practical? (always a bonus in these financially-challenging times.) Stingy? Working for love rather than a big fat paycheck? Or somewhere in between?

Just look at the Honda Fit pics — does this look like a guy who will go wild? I don’t think so.

The truth is, just as men shouldn’t judge a woman by her hair color or her cup size, you just can’t judge a man by his car — especially these days. That Mercedes Benz might be one missed payment away from being repo’d. That Yaris driver might be making social commentary. The Toyota guy might be exactly what you think, or nothing like you’d expect.

The truth is, if you want to find a real relationship, you have to move beyond the polished, buffed or rusty surface and dig a little deeper than what is parked in his driveway.

Besides, the average American only drives his or her car for 3 or 4 years — but true love, well, that lasts forever.
